Ana’s story begins the day she is born with HIV, transmitted from her mother, who dies just a few years later. From then on, Ana's childhood becomes a blur of secrets—about her illness, her family, and the abuse she endures. Shuffled from home to home, Ana rarely finds safety or acceptance. But after she falls in love and becomes pregnant at seventeen, she embarks on a journey that leads her to new beginnings, new sorrows, and new hope. Based on her work with UNICEF and inspired by the framework of one girl's life, Jenna Bush tells the story of many children around the world who are excluded from basic care, support, and education. Resources at the back of this book share how you can help children like Ana and protect yourself and others.

    Works for me!

We struggled between buying this unit and the comperable Dirt Devil offering, when we saw them at the local discount stores. Liking the stiffer dual-rotating beater-bar style brushes on the Bissell better than the much softer brushes on the spinning disk the Dirt Devil had, we settled on the Bissell. At the store, the only negative factor for the Bissell appeared to be it's one-year warranty, versus the two-years offered with the Dirt Devil. We did not consider a cordless model, presuming they would be less powerful. We also did not consider a model without scrub brushes.I used our new Bissell briefly last night on a couple of recent pet stains, and it did a good job. Today, I used it on all the rest of the pet stains on our light living room carpet, many of which were old. Almost all of them lifted well. The Bissell clean tank will hold a full 8 oz. (3-4 oz. cleaning product and 4 oz. water), compared to the Dirt Devil that only holds a total of 6 oz. It does a decent... 4/5 Sandi Hultman "SandiDandi" (Coon Rapids, Minnesota United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: BISSELL Spotlifter Powerbrush Handheld Deep Cleaner, 1716B (Kitchen) We struggled between buying this unit and the comperable Dirt Devil offering, when we saw them at the local discount stores. One powerful little cleaner

0 5/5 Samantha Rupinski (Oconomowoc, WI) - See all my reviews This review is from: BISSELL Spotlifter Powerbrush Handheld Deep Cleaner, 1716B (Kitchen) I have mostly hardwood in my home, but I do have a little bit of carpet, so I bought one of these for the small spots and spills. I have 3 kids and 2 dogs, so it seems that accidents are a daily occurence. I used this Spotlifter on some old pop stains that have been on the carpet for months, and it got them out no problem. I couldn't believe how well it worked and how dirty the water was that came out of my carpet. It worked so well that I decied to try it on my couch and chair, and it did a great job on them as well. Next stop was my car's interior, which was no small feat. It made my 6 year old minivan look and smell almost new. Buying this Spotlifter was definitely money well spent. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 3, 2003

    Do not WASTE your money!

I feel bad about giving this review, but I must. This is the worst machine ever created. Let me say that I think Bissell has excellent quality machines (Little Green) but this is not one of them.First of all, this machine has absolutely NO suction to it whatsoever. I managed to trigger out around a cup full of solution, and the spotlifter only 'sucked' 1/4 of it back up. My carpet was soaking wet. I had to lug out my Hoover Steamvac to suck up the rest of the water. Naturally, I thought I had a faulty spotlifter, so I exchanged it for another one. I got the SAME thing, a spotlifter without suction.Secondly, the trigger mechanism is horrid. Instead of it releasing a steady stream of liquid, it is spray oriented, where you must continuously spray it like a spray bottle. That becomes extremely tiresome, and it actually hurts your hands, as when you 'try' to suction the liquid, you have to tilt the machine forward and it is very cumbersome and large. All in all, I hated... 1/5 Susan Shams (West Des Moines, IA) - See all my reviews, February 29, 2004

    Got Stains?

I got the Dirt Devil Spot Scrubber for a gift at christmas and with two dog I thougtht this thing will really be handy. I have Two Border Collies they are Seven and Three so they are past the potty training, but the sopts from when they were potty training are still there. So the next day after I got it I decided to find a big old spot and man was I suprised at how well it got it out and how dry it was.Pros1.Corded for continuous power2. Rotating Brush is good at scrubbing but gentle Enough not to ruin the rugs.3.powerful suction4. good cord lengthCons1.Dirty water bin takes long to dry word of advice(shake it after rinsing leave near heater with end cap off)Thats it for the consNow I will tell you about my experience with different cleaners. My first one was the hoover steam vac with the brushes. It ruined my carpets the rotating brushes unwind the threads in the rug leaving it looking matted down. The next machine I used was... 5/5 Philip Davis (Silicon Valley, USA) - See all my reviews, January 6, 2002

no smell has to mean it is getting the job done right

I purchased this about three weeks ago along with a new puppy. Those of you who know about potty training a puppy can imagine how happy I am to have the spot scrubber. I use it so much I don't even unplug it from the wall. I only have two complaints for the spot scrubber though. First of all, the cleaning solution tank does not hold enough. I can fill it 4 times before the dirty water creeps just under the full line in the dirty water tank. My solution to this problem is to just tote one of those generic household cleaner spray bottles with the cleaning water mixture in it around with the spot scrubber. My second complaint is that the exhaust smells just like whatever you just vaccumed up. So, if you don't clean the dirty water tank EVERY TIME you use it :( , well let's just say it's not aromatherapy. As far as performance, it is very powerful because it is a plug in model versus a cordless. Every spot I have cleaned on my carpet turned out SO clean I have had to go over that... 4/5 0, December 21, 2001

    Great, misunderstood machine

Looking at a number of previous reviews, I'd like to clarify a few points:* It's not a carpet cleaner, it's a _spot scrubber_. Anyone purchasing a machine with a single brush who expects to clean whole sections of carpet deserves all the self-inflicted frustration they've expressed here. My father-in-law tried to use our scrubber to clean his entire entryway. His verdict: "The thing is worthless." My wife and I just roll our eyes.* The spray nozzle shoots out lots of solution in a narrow, focused pattern, perfect for treating _spots_. It takes only a few pumps. The image of someone stalking around a room trying to spray anything more than about 20 inches square (again, anything more than a _spot_) is just painful.* The thing sucks strongly enough to fill the dirty water reservoir. I suspect that some folks haven't cracked the manual or noticed the yellow knob to switch between scrubbing and suction. All that said, I hate to think of living without this... 4/5 0, March 30, 2004

    Product Nightmare

Oh, how I wish I had checked reviews before I bought this product! Whoever designed this product was apparently a hateful, vengeful person who secretly wants to ruin the day of housewives everywhere. Some of my favorite features of this product are:When you are cleaning up a disgusting spot of something, this device will randomly spew the dirty water out of the side vents, usually all over your legs as you are crouched over the spot trying to remove it. This happens when the product has a bare tablespoon of dirty water. Would it have been so hard to, I don't know, make the holding tank big enough to hold the dirty water? Or maybe make it where, when slightly full, the dirty water goes ANYWHERE other than on you and your house? Have you ever smelled hot dog urine water that has been steamed out of a vent? That smell will stay in your house for MONTHS, and no amount of spot scrubbing will help. The scrub brush is pretty much useless, it kind of scrubs the spot,... 1/5 India M. Works well but you have to know how to use it...

This is my second hand held spot cleaner. It works and works well, but you have to understand how to use it (I made this disclaimer because I read the first few reviews which were all negative). Certainly there are pros and cons to this cleaner, but read on...Pros:1) Powerful, that's why it's so noisy, or vice versa. The description says it's the industry's most powerful "Hand-Held Extractor". I don't know on what basis they make that claim, but it is certainly powerful.2) The scrubber does work but you have to be patient and you don't have to use a lot of strength or force. You just need to put it right at the spot and keep it there and move it gently. If you look at it sideways you can see it's doing it's job. Because the scrubber only rotates one way I do it at a 90% angle as well to make sure it hits the stain at a different angle.Cons:1) Noisy (cf. powerful above). I don't know if a powerful vacuum can be made quiet, but part of the... 4/5 John B. Goode "JBG" (Earth) - See all my reviews, September 18, 2011

This is going back! Pros: price is reasonable, easy to figure out and assemble, good suction -- most of the water is removed from carpet. Cons: extremely noisy; parts are difficult to disassemble -- knobs are too small on screw tops while click-on parts stick and it's difficult to get a grip anywhere because of the design, knob on dirty tank is very difficult to open and close, wet or dry; brush seems useless -- most of the scrubbing action comes from manually moving the machine back and forth over the spot; sprayer never did work right no matter how long I held it down; difficult to clean afterward -- one has to remove screws to run water through the suction nozzle, the brush is attached so one must run water over the end of the machine to clean it easily; and finally, I got sprayed with puppy poop water which came out the air flow "out" vent, probably because I moved the machine too vigorously or it got too full (I hadn't used all the allowed solution in the first tank) -- the... 1/5 MamaN (Greenfield, IN USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil Spot Scrubber (Kitchen) This is going back!
